Friendship: May 2021
Once I had a friend’s daughter make me sugar cookies, but she left out one key ingredient: the sugar! At that point I’m not sure it’s even fair to call it a sugar cookie, more like a very hard roll. Some ingredients are so important we can’t leave them out. A key ingredient for a great life are great friends. Whether it’s a party to celebrate a graduation or someone to pray with you during a tragedy, it would be impossible to have a joy filled life without friends. That’s why we are spending this entire month talking about the theme of friendship:
Friendship – is trusting and supporting one another over time.
We start the month with a lesson centered around our verse from Proverbs 17:17. In this lesson we talk about the difference between a good friend and a bad friend.
In week two, we discuss the importance of friends to help when things are difficult. We learn from Solomon that two are better than one because when we fall we have someone to help us up.
In week three, we learn that a true friend sometimes has to say difficult things. When Paul writes to rebuke the church at Corinth it isn’t easy, but Paul knows he has to do it. Because of it, the church fixes the problem. A friend can help correct us before things get worse.
Finally, we end the month looking at the story of Jonathan and David. Loyalty is one of the most important characteristics of a friend and few display it better than Jonathan. Jonathan faces a difficult choice: Be a loyal friend to David and lose his chance to be king OR betray David and become king himself. Jonathan chooses to be a loyal friend.
We hope this month at your school, your church, and in your family you have some great conversations on Friendship. This is a great month to highlight long-time family friends, friends who helped you at critical times, and friends who have brought joy into your life. It is also a good time to reach out to friends you have lost touch with and let them know how important they are to you.
May your friends fill your life with Joy as we walk together toward Jesus.
